Colour and sheen get settled before any cabinet painting begins, on full-size sample doors sprayed in the actual product and left standing in the actual kitchen, with the colour matched from whichever paint deck the owner prefers.
A colour that looks right in a Masonville showroom looks different in a north-facing Old North kitchen or a south-facing great room in Sunningdale. Stark white is fading. Today's whites run warm, toward cream, off-white and antique white, which get along with stone counters and wood floors. Greige, the grey-beige family, is the second most common cabinet painting colour and the safest with a dark counter. Sage and forest green, once island colours, now cover whole kitchens. Navy remains the most requested bold colour, usually on an island or lower cabinets. Charcoal and black work with brass hardware and a light floor.
None of that decides a particular kitchen. It narrows the first round of samples to three or four, and the doors do the rest.
A chip is a two-inch square of colour printed on card. A cabinet door is a raised or flat panel of enamel that catches light on every edge. Each colour under consideration is sprayed on a full-size door in the chosen product and sheen, and the doors are stood in the kitchen for several days, against the counter, under the range hood light and beside the window. Cabinet painting colours read darker on a large surface than on a chip, and warmer under warm bulbs, and the sample door shows both before anything is committed.
Sheen changes the colour. Satin is the standard for painted cabinets because it hides small flaws, cleans well and never glares. Semi-gloss reads brighter and shows every bump, and it is chosen mostly for dark colours where the depth helps. Matte hides the most and cleans the least, which is why it is rare in cabinet painting.
Direct sun matters too. A white alkyd enamel on a south-facing wall warms slightly over a year, while the same colour in a north-facing kitchen barely moves. For a sun-drenched white, satin over semi-gloss and a two-part polyurethane over a plain alkyd are the standard recommendations, and the quote states which one is going on.
Whatever colour you find in any of the big paint decks can be mixed into the cabinet painting products we spray.
