The finish lasts because the prep is done in full and written down. Every door and every drawer front comes off with a label, gets a solvent wash to lift cooking film and old wax, is sanded until dull, and receives whichever primer its material calls for. Oak gets a shellac primer for tannins. Melamine and thermofoil need an adhesion primer. Painted MDF gets a scuff and a fresh bonding coat.
In the booth the doors get thin sprayed coats, a sanding between each, and time to harden before returning. In the kitchen the boxes get sprayed inside a sealed plastic enclosure. That is the difference between a cabinet painting job with a factory finish and one that shows brush marks by the sink. Oak cabinets paint well provided the tannins get blocked and the grain gets filled. The houses of Oakridge, Westmount, Byron, White Oaks and Stoneybrook were fitted with golden oak in the 1970s and 1980s, and most of it is still on the walls, sound but orange. A water-based primer over raw oak lets yellow and pink tannin blotches bleed through the topcoat within weeks, so a shellac primer goes on first.
The open grain is the second decision. After a few passes of grain filler and a sanding, the door reads as smooth painted wood. Thermofoil is a thin vinyl skin pressed with heat onto an MDF door, and heat from a range or a dishwasher lifts it at the edges. Where the skin is still tight, thermofoil accepts cabinet painting readily once an adhesion primer is on. Thermofoil that is already lifting cannot be painted, because paint does not glue vinyl back to a board.

One drawer front swollen beneath the sink, or a lone door with veneer lifting, can be swapped out and painted so it matches its twenty neighbours. The tall pantry, the laundry room uppers, the mudroom lockers and the built-in bookcase beside the fireplace are all cabinet painting work, and most of it cannot go to the booth. Painting pantries, laundry cabinets and built-ins happens in the room itself inside a sealed plastic enclosure, using the identical primer, sprayed coats and between-coat sanding. Hardware is decided before the primer goes on. Four things move the price of kitchen cabinet painting: the door and drawer tally, the material, the colour, and the extras. Oak needs grain fill and a shellac primer. Thermofoil and melamine need a bonding primer. A deep navy takes an extra coat. An island in a second colour, crown moulding, interiors and hardware drilling are each their own line.
In 2026 the Ontario market puts a typical whole kitchen at $2,500 to $5,500. Not if the prep and the product are right. Chipping around handles and on the cutlery drawer traces to grease under the paint, from wall paint used on cabinets, or from a soft finish used hard before it cured. A sprayed 2K polyurethane or waterborne alkyd enamel over the correct primer, treated gently for the first two weeks, holds up at the handles for years.
Melamine, and thermofoil whose skin is still tight, paint well once an adhesion primer is down. Where the vinyl has already lifted along an edge, no paint can fix it, since paint does not glue vinyl back onto MDF. Such a door is either stripped down to bare MDF or swapped for a new one and painted alongside the rest.
Interiors are quoted separately because they double the surface area. Most kitchens keep the interiors as they are, since the door covers them. The usual exceptions are open shelves, uppers with glass fronts and pantry interiors, and the quote lists them as their own line.
